David Vroonland, Ed. D., Superintendent

Dr. David VroonlandDr. David Vroonland officially assumed his position as superintendent of Mesquite ISD on July 1, 2015. An educator for more than 30 years, Vroonland began his education career in 1986 as a teacher and coach in Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD. In 1991, he accepted a similar position at DuVal High school in Lanham, Md., followed by two and a half years as a coach and teacher in Akishima, Japan. In 1995, Vroonland returned to Texas to teach and coach at McNeil Junior High School in Wichita Falls ISD. 

His administrative experience began in 1999 in Wichita Falls when he became an assistant principal at Zundy Junior High; he later became principal at Barwise Junior High. Vroonland moved to Allen High School in Allen ISD as house principal in 2003. He opened Ereckson Middle School in Allen as principal in 2004 before assuming the role of assistant superintendent of administrative services in Allen ISD in 2006. Most recently, Vroonland served as superintendent of Frenship ISD, which is located on the southwestern side of Lubbock County.

Dr. Vroonland and his wife, Joy, have two sons, Caleb and Matthew, and two grandchildren, Josalin and William. Dr. Vroonland earned his bachelor's degree from Centenary College of Louisiana, his master's from Midwestern State University and his doctorate from the University of North Texas.



Beth Nicholas
Deputy Superintendent

Beth Nicholas has served in the field of education for more than 30 years. She has taught at all levels from elementary to college in Texas, Missouri and Connecticut.

Most recently, she worked in Allen ISD, where she served as a teacher, assistant principal, director, assistant superintendent and interim superintendent. She joined the Mesquite ISD family as deputy superintendent in January 2016.

Kathryn Bohling
Assistant Superintendent for Business Services 

photo of K BohlingKathryn Bohling received her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Southwest Texas State University and her master's degree in administration from the University of North Texas. She started her career in Dallas ISD and Allen ISD before coming to Mesquite, where she taught at Hanby Elementary before opening Gray and Mackey elementaries. She served as administrative officer of special education for seven years before entering into her current role.

Dr. Karyn Cummings
Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services

Mesquite ISD. She began as a teacher at Black Elementary and then taught at Kimbrough Middle School. She later moved into t
he assistant principal role at Kimbrough before becoming principal at Kimball Elemen
tary. She opened Terry Middle School as principal and then moved to Poteet High School as principal there before becoming assistant superintendent.

Dr. Cummings earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas A&M University in Commerce and her doctorate from Lamar University.

Dr. Treva Franklin
Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction

During her educational career, Dr. Franklin has been an elementary teacher, counselor, assistant principal, principal and central office administrator. She currently serves on the board of directors for Texas ASCD.

Dr. Franklin oversees the currriculum in Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12, the district's gifted and talented program, federal title programs and other duties. She is committed to "ensuring that all students develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they will need to excel in life, learning and work, now and in the future."

Mary Randall

Assistant Superintendent for Personnel Services

photo of Mary Randall Mrs. Randall began her teaching career as a high school science teacher in Malvern, Ark., where she taught chemistry and physics for eight years before moving to Texas in 1989. In Texas Mrs. Randall was a high school science teacher at Skyline High School in Dallas ISD for four years. In 1993, she moved to Mesquite ISD and North Mesquite High School, where she taught chemistry for five years before becoming assistant principal there in 1997.

In 2001, she joined Personnel Services, where she served as director of personnel, executive director over secondary and now as assistant superintendent.

Mrs. Randall received her bachelor's degree from Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Ark., and her master's degree from Texas A&M University at Commerce.

Dr. Angel Rivera

Chief of Strategic Initiatives and Community Engagement

photo of A RiveraAfter seven years in the U.S. Army, Dr. Rivera served as a teacher and assistant principal with Pasadena ISD before becoming principal at Mike Moses Middle School in Nacogdoches. He then served as principal in Mansfield before relocating to Garland, where he was principal at Lakeview Centennial High School. Most recently, he was area director for curriculum, instruction and assessment with Garland ISD.

Dr. Rivera received his bachelor's degree from the University of Houston - Clear Lake, a master's from St. Thomas and a doctorate from Stephen F. Austin University.

Laura Jobe
Executive Director for Communications

photo of L JobeMs. Jobe joined Mesquite ISD in 1997 as a coordinator in the Communications Department. She later became director and eventually executive director overseeing all of the district's communications functions.

Prior to working in MISD, Ms. Jobe worked in journalism, corporate communications and communications consulting. She received her bachelor's degree from Oklahoma Baptist University and her master's degree from Amberton University.
