Accountability Ratings

On Aug. 15, 2018, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) released the 2018 A-F state accountability ratings for more than 1,200 school districts and charters, as well as more than 8,100 campuses statewide.

For the first time, districts receive a grade or rating based on performance in three areas:

  • Student Achievement measures what students know and can do by the end of the year. It includes results from state assessments across all subjects for all students, on both general and alternate assessments, College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR) indicators, like AP, dual credit, SAT, ACT results and graduation rates.
  • School Progress measures how much better students are doing on the STAAR test this year versus last year, and how much better students are doing academically relative to schools with similar percentages of economically disadvantaged students.
  • Closing the Gaps looks at performance among student groups, including various racial/ethnic groups, socioeconomic backgrounds and other factors.

Parents are encouraged to visit TXschools.org to view online report cards designed to be useful tools in seeing how a school or school district is doing in different areas. The report cards spotlight specific strengths and challenges, in order to assure the needs of all students are being met. Parents can search by district or school name and compare that district’s or school’s performance to others in their area.

Distinction Designation

Campuses that receive an accountability rating of Met Standard are also eligible for distinction designations. Distinction designations are awarded to campuses based on achievement on performance indicators compared to a group of 40 campuses of similar type, size and student demographics. There are seven possible distinctions; however, not all seven distinctions are possible at all campuses. For example, Academic Achievement in Social Studies is not available for elementary campuses.

The distinctions are:

  1. Top 25% Student Progress (based on Index 2)
  2. Top 25% Closing Achievement Gap (based on Index 3)
  3. Academic Achievement in Reading/Language Arts
  4. Academic Achievement in Math
  5. Academic Achievement in Science
  6. Academic Achievement in Social Studies
  7. Postsecondary Readiness

Kimball Elementary and Wilkinson Middle School earned all possible distinctions in 2018 accountability ratings

Fifty-two percent of campuses in MISD earned one or more distinctions.

“Earning one or more campus distinctions is noteworthy and should be a source of pride in a community,” said Commissioner of Education Mike Morath.
