Texas A&M-Commerce, Mesquite ISD Continue Partnership with Signing
Officials from Texas A&M University-Commerce and Mesquite Independent School District signed an agreement on Wednesday that will continue the 19-year partnership between the schools.

“This is very critical partnership for us because of the location in Mesquite,” said Dr. Brent Mangus, A&M-Commerce dean, college of education and human services. “The partnership deals with a very important group of people and population. I see this partnership continuing well into the future.”

The collaboration focuses on addressing the

need for quality teachers in Texas, increasing the number of minority graduates with teaching certificates and increasing the number of students graduating with a bilingual or English as a second language teaching certificate. It also seeks to increase the Hispanic student participation rate in higher education.

Students have the opportunity to participate in undergraduate and master’s degree programs in curriculum and instruction, field-based programs for intern residents, and an educational leadership program at the joint facility in Mesquite.

“A key part of the agreement is the university’s commitment to helping Mesquite be the best district it can be, and Mesquite ISD’s commitment to helping A&M-Commerce do the best job it can to educate future teachers,” said Dr. Martha Foote, A&M-Commerce department head for curriculum and instruction. “The partnership honors children and it honors teachers. We all try to evolve, grow and learn together.”

The partnership recently received the Texas Higher Education Star Award for its efforts in providing quality educational opportunities for all students.

“It’s a true collaborative effort,” said Dr. Susan Weaver, director of the A&M-Commerce/Mesquite ISD partnership. “We not only collaborate on how programs are designed, but also in teaching, instruction and assessment. I really value this partnership.”

KC Wows Fans, Helps Raise Money For Students
Sounds of the 70s music era filled Resistol Arena Friday night as KC and the Sunshine Band entertained some 2,500 people at the Mesquite ISD Education Foundation’s fourth annual A Lone Star Legacy concert. While final totals are still being counted, officials are calling the event a success, ensuring continued funding for the Foundation.

“We are thankful for the generous support of our sponsors and the fans who helped make this one the most memorable concerts yet,” said David Belt, Foundation president. “We are looking forward to an even bigger event next spring.”

The evening included a dinner, silent and live auction and the headliner, KC.

“This event is the primary source of funding for the Foundation. All proceeds from the concert will go directly to benefit MISD students and teachers,” said Foundation Executive Director Linda Lentz.

The Mesquite ISD Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation dedicated to enriching and enhancing the education of Mesquite ISD’s 37,000 students.
