| need for quality teachers in Texas, increasing the number of minority graduates with teaching certificates and increasing the number of students graduating with a bilingual or English as a second language teaching certificate. It also seeks to increase the Hispanic student participation rate in higher education.
Students have the opportunity to participate in undergraduate and master’s degree programs in curriculum and instruction, field-based programs for intern residents, and an educational leadership program at the joint facility in Mesquite.
“A key part of the agreement is the university’s commitment to helping Mesquite be the best district it can be, and Mesquite ISD’s commitment to helping A&M-Commerce do the best job it can to educate future teachers,” said Dr. Martha Foote, A&M-Commerce department head for curriculum and instruction. “The partnership honors children and it honors teachers. We all try to evolve, grow and learn together.”
The partnership recently received the Texas Higher Education Star Award for its efforts in providing quality educational opportunities for all students.
“It’s a true collaborative effort,” said Dr. Susan Weaver, director of the A&M-Commerce/Mesquite ISD partnership. “We not only collaborate on how programs are designed, but also in teaching, instruction and assessment. I really value this partnership.”
