MESQUITE ISD ATHLETIC TRAINING PROGRAMS RECOGNIZED

All five MISD high school Athletic Training programs have been recognized by the National Athletic Trainers Association as a 1st Team Safe Sports School. “This is a huge honor for all to be recognized as 1st Team,” said MISD Athletic Director Steve Bragg. "There is an application process where stringent safety and training guidelines related to athlete safety must be met."

POTEET PIRATES WIN FAIR OAKS TENNIS TOURNAMENT

Despite high winds and wind chills in the 20s, the Poteet High School Tennis Team reigned supreme, taking first place in the Fair Oaks Tennis Center Tournament on January 22, 2016. The Pirates, led by Coach Katelyn Smith were one of eight High Schools that competed in the Tournament. Other High Schools competing were Greenville, Bryan Adams, Terrell, Naaman Smith, Irving, Irving Nimitz and West Mesquite.

Pirates taking individual honors were Taylor Lighty, 1st place Girls A Singles, Kane Bobier, 1st place Boys A singles, Gustavo Munoz, 1st place Boys B singles, and Tuyet Nguyen, 1st place Girls C singles. In the Doubles Division, Christina Garcia and Eddy Mbungkah took 1st place in the Mixed doubles. Emanuel Willis and Eric Pedraza took 2nd place in the Boys B doubles and Audrey Starks and Vanessa Willis took 2nd place in the girls B doubles. Christian Huber and Steven Joseph won the Boys B doubles consolation bracket. Although it was a very long day, it proved to be very rewarding for the Poteet Tennis Team. Their next tournament will take place on February 5th.

Jene Samuels – Terry Middle School, and Zyan Chambers - Smith Elementary, both won first place in their age division at the Elks Hoop Shoot Area Competition this past Saturday. This qualified both of them to move on to the State Level Competition which will take place in February in Dallas.


ACADEMIC SUCCESS FOR VARSITY ATHLETES

Mesquite ISD varsity athletes excelled in the classroom during the first six weeks grading period. All varsity volleyball players in MISD passed all classes - 67 players total! In varsity football, 97% passed all classes, with North Mesquite having 100% of their 57 varsity players passing all of their classes. Other in-season athletes also performed well, as Mesquite High cross country, Horn cross country, Horn tennis, West Mesquite cross country, Poteet cross country, and Poteet tennis all had 100% passing rates. Overall, 93.2% of the 1197 varsity athletes in MISD passed all classes for the first six weeks of the 2015-16 school year.
