Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is more than a program; it’s a mindset. At MISD, we proudly offer AVID as a powerful college and career readiness system that equips students with the skills, strategies, and support they need to achieve their goals. Through high expectations, academic rigor, and a strong culture of encouragement, AVID helps students build confidence, develop leadership, and take ownership of their learning.

AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society.

AVID secondary for grades 7-12 equips students with skills that best prepare them for college and their careers. Students receive additional academic, social, and emotional support for one elective period to help them succeed in the required rigorous courses. Students must maintain a GPA of 2.5 to 3.5, enroll in at least one rigorous course each term, demonstrate a desire to attend college, and apply and interview before being accepted into the AVID program. Students accepted into AVID must set high expectations and are given the support they need to prepare for and thrive in postsecondary opportunities.

  • College preparedness and awareness through guest speakers, field trips, college and career exploration
  • Collaboration through class discussions, team-building lessons, and collaborative study groups and tutorials with college tutors
  • Character development including self-awareness, goal setting and community and school involvement
  • Communication skills such as public speaking, speaking with adults and peers, and written communication
  • Critical thinking and questioning
  • Writing skills
  • Critical reading skills
  • Organization skills including binders, planners, academic portfolios, focused note-taking and study habits
  • Assists students with application process for colleges and universities

  • Have passing STAAR scores
  • Maintain a 2.5-3.5 GPA
  • Aspire to attend college or post-secondary training after high school
  • Are historically underserved in post-secondary institutions
  • May be the first in their family to attend college
  • May have special circumstances, determined by the school’s site team, that make the AVID elective the best choice for the student
