While some students discover their passions inside a classroom, Neftali Salas found his foundation at just 8 years old, working alongside his grandfather. Together, they built fences and tackled hands-on projects that at first seemed like simple tasks. Over time, those moments became more. They became a source of pride and the beginning of a calling.

When Neftali joined the construction program at Vanguard High School, he brought those early lessons with him. At first, he was quiet. He observed. He learned. But as his skills grew, so did his confidence. Soon, he began assuming leadership roles. One day, when his instructor, Mr. Thomas, was out, Neftali took initiative. He organized the class and kept the shop running. In that moment, he realized his classmates looked to him for guidance. What surprised him most was how naturally it came. Everything Mr. Thomas had taught him—the expectations, the standards, the mindset—had taken root. Neftali was not just imitating leadership. He was living it. That moment marked a shift. He was not just learning the trade. He was leading it.

Since then, Neftali’s belief in his abilities has only grown. He knows construction trades are often misunderstood. “People think we are not smart, but this takes a lot of patience, ingenuity, and math,” he explains. That insight pushed him to bring his best to the state SkillsUSA competition. When he stepped back to evaluate his work, he saw more than a finished build. He saw growth. He saw precision. He saw progress.

Neftali placed among the top competitors in the state, but what matters most is the journey. He is proud of where he started and even more proud of where he is headed. He plans to stay in construction, save money, and one day build something entirely his own.

With strong values, skilled hands, and a clear vision, Neftali Salas is building more than structures. He is building a future grounded in excellence, integrity, and lasting impact.
