Mesquite ISD's Read Play Talk Earns National Recognition from Library of Congress

Mesquite ISD has been named a 2026 Library of Congress Literacy Awards Emerging Strategies Honoree for its Read Play Talk initiative, recognizing the district's innovative approach to promoting early literacy and supporting young learners.
The district was formally recognized on Thursday, November 5, during the Library of Congress Literacy Awards Symposium and Recognition ceremony in Washington, D.C.
The Library of Congress Literacy Awards celebrate organizations that develop creative, effective, and replicable strategies to advance literacy. The Emerging Strategies recognition specifically honors initiatives that demonstrate significant creativity and promise in their approach to literacy.
Building Strong Foundations Before Kindergarten
Read Play Talk is Mesquite ISD's early literacy initiative that helps families support their children's development from birth through age 5. By encouraging families to read, play, and talk together every day, the initiative helps children develop language skills and build a strong foundation for learning before they enter kindergarten.
What makes Read Play Talk unique is its community-wide approach. The initiative brings together families, educators, local businesses, and community organizations to make early learning opportunities and resources more accessible.
Through programs such as Little Readers, families can participate in free early literacy activities at Mesquite ISD elementary schools. The initiative also provides Little Free Libraries at all 34 elementary campuses, giving families greater access to books throughout the community.
Another key component is Read Play Talk From the Start, a five-week program formerly known as LENA Start. The program helps parents and caregivers understand how everyday conversations support early brain development and provides practical ways to strengthen their children's language and communication skills.
Read Play Talk offers more than 300 Little Readers sessions each year, has helped more than 570 families through its early literacy parent education program and distributes more than 2,000 books annually.
A National Recognition of Community Impact
As part of the recognition, Mesquite ISD will receive a $5,000 award.
The Library of Congress highlighted Read Play Talk's focus on early childhood development to help families understand the importance of everyday conversations in preparing children for school.
The Literacy Awards Program recognizes organizations advancing literacy in the United States and around the world.
This national honor reflects Mesquite ISD's commitment to creating opportunities for children long before their first day of school. It also celebrates the families and community partners whose continued involvement helps make early literacy a shared priority across Mesquite.
