A brighter, more connected Poteet High School is coming into view. The proposed design brings programs currently housed in portable buildings into the main campus and creates a visible center for learning, gathering, and Pirate pride.

A stronger heart for the Pirate campus

The plan is organized around “The Helm,” a bright and visible cafeteria and library that will become the heart of student life. Clearer pathways, improved lighting, and refreshed finishes will make the campus easier to navigate and more welcoming from one end to the other.

A new academic wing will bring programs currently housed in portable buildings to the main campus and add a flexible, multipurpose space that also serves as a storm shelter. Renovations will address the library, culinary lab, locker rooms, corridors, and common areas while creating space for student programs such as esports, health science, engineering, and cosmetology.

Responsible planning, visible impact

The Poteet High project began with a close review of campus challenges, including isolated portable classrooms, accessibility concerns, congestion, dark corridors, and undersized learning spaces. Each proposed improvement directly addresses those identified priorities.

The plan includes 85,275 square feet of renovation and 32,190 square feet of new construction. By focusing most of the planned work on existing spaces, the district can preserve useful facilities while adding the academic wing, storm shelter, and specialized learning areas students need.

The current project schedule continues with the construction document development phase through January 2027, followed by bidding and permitting. Construction is currently scheduled to begin in May 2027 and be completed by August 2029.

Designed for students and the future

From the new academic wing and storm shelter to a brighter library, cafeteria, and corridors, the proposed improvements are designed to support today’s Pirates while giving the campus room to adapt in the years ahead. Mesquite ISD will continue sharing updates as plans move forward.
