MISD Students Build Lifelong Skills Through Outdoor Recreation Experience

Mesquite ISD students traded traditional classroom walls for the outdoors this spring as participants in the district’s Lifetime Recreation and Outdoor Pursuits courses took part in an immersive, hands-on learning experience at Rorie Galloway Day Camp.
Offered at all six MISD high schools and six middle schools (Agnew, Wilkinson, Vanston, Berry, Woolley and Frasier), the courses are designed to help students develop lifelong recreational and outdoor skills while strengthening teamwork, leadership, and confidence.
Throughout the school year, students build skills in activities such as kayaking, archery, fishing, outdoor cooking, survival skills, and orienteering. This year marked the first time students had the opportunity to put those lessons into practice in a real-world outdoor setting through a districtwide field trip experience.
At Rorie Galloway Day Camp, students kayaked across the water, cast their fishing lines from the dock, practiced archery, competed in outdoor games, and participated in team-building activities, all surrounded by nature.
Beyond learning new skills, the experience encouraged students to develop a deeper appreciation for the outdoors and the environment while discovering healthy, active hobbies they can enjoy for years to come. Through programs like Lifetime Recreation and Outdoor Pursuits, Mesquite ISD is creating opportunities for students to explore new interests, build meaningful connections, and develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
